Robert (Bob) Miller

I am interested in benthic subtidal ecology, particularly community ecology and the role of primary producers in marine ecosystems. Off southern California, kelp forests are a spectacular example of marine ecosystems, rivaling coral reefs in beauty and biodiversity.  With the Santa Barbara Coastal Long-Term Ecological Research program I study the dynamics of different groups of primary producers, including kelp, understory macroalgae, and phytoplankton, how these groups interact competitively, and their roles in coastal food webs.

Lee Hannah

Lee Hannah is Senior Fellow in Climate Change Biology at Conservation International’s (CI) Center for Applied Biodiversity Science. Tracking with his interest in the role of climate change in conservation planning and methods of corridor design, he heads CI’s efforts to develop conservation responses to climate change.

Lee Harrison

Lee Harrison conducts field and modeling studies of river hydrodynamics, sediment transport and channel morphology.  His research focuses on the interactions between geomorphic, hydrologic and river ecosystem processes.  He is currently conducting investigations on: channel-floodplain dynamics in meandering rivers; biophysical interactions in riverine ecosystems; improved prediction in river management; and the geomorphic response of rivers to dam removal. 

Hunter Lenihan

Hunter Lenihan’s primary research interests lie in the fields of applied population and community ecology, especially in connection with fisheries management and restoration. He has collaborated with California fishing communities to design research projects intended to advance habitat-based fisheries management. He is also exploring ecological and oceanographic processes that regulate coral populations, particularly at a long-term project on the island of Moorea, in French Polynesia, with the goal of developing new techniques for coral reef restoration.

Leila M. V. Carvalho

Dr. Carvalho is a Professor in the Department of Geography and Researcher at the Earth Research Institute, UCSB. She has a B.S., M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Meteorology from the University of São Paulo, Brazil. Her research interests are in regional and large-scale climate variability and modeling, global climate change and scaling processes in geophysics. These topics include (but are not limited to) climate variation and change in monsoon regions, tropical-extratropical interactions, extreme precipitation and temperature, and regional modeling.

Carter Ohlmann

Research Interests:

  • Physical and optical oceanography.
  • How ocean radiant heating influences dynamics and thermodynamics.
  • Ocean circulation.
  • The exchange of shelf and offshore waters.
  • Oceanography in the Gulf of Mexico.
  • Oceanography in the Santa Barbara Channel.

Claudia Tyler

My research is in the field of plant ecology. I am interested in the role of disturbance, plant-animal interactions and other factors in structuring populations and communities, primarily in shrubland, grassland and oak woodland systems. My current research areas include controls on establishment of oaks (Quercus lobata, Q. douglasii, and Q. agrifolia), effects of cattle on oak savanna plant communities, and mechanisms affecting post-fire chaparral seedling establishment.
